On Saturday, the Palo Alto Boys Varsity Wrestling Team competed in the Half Moon Bay Peninsula wrestling tournament. The team scored 153 points earning 2nd place out of 37 teams. Returning CCS runner-up, Andrew Wang dominated the competition with 3 pins and a technical fall en route to his second Peninsula title. Sophomore Adar Schwarzbach also won the 138lb weight class going 4-0 on the day. Adar came in as the 8 seed won a tough Quarter-final match against the #8 ranked wrestler in CCS. He was down 3-1 late in the 3rd period and earned a takedown and near fall in the final seconds of the bout. Dara Heydarpour ended up taking 2nd place and toughed out a 1-0 decision by beating the #6 ranked wrestler in CCS from Salinas HS. Freshman Braumon (Cade) Creighton made his long awaited high school debut and came away with a 2nd place finish. In his semi-final bout, Cade dominated CCS #3 ranked Estevan Sanchez from Silver Creek by scoring 7 takedowns and recorded a major decision 15-6. When a wrestler loses in a championship round and cannot earn 1st place, we talk about earning the next best thing. Tyler Weaver-Escobar, Halo Lynch and Max Felter all earned the next best thing and showed a lot of GRIT along the way! Tyler lost his semi-final and had to rattle of two wins to earn 3rd place. Halo Lynch lost in the quarter-finals and could only come back to take 5th place, that’s exactly what he did and toughed out a few matches in the process. Lastly, Max Felter lost in the opening round but rebounded by winning 3 straight matches to earn Consolation champion. Charlie Williams and Macguire Ferrell went 2-2 and 3-2 on the day and were both awarded with 4th place.
The coaching staff is proud of the way the boys wrestled but understands there are things we need to improve on. The JV will be competing on Friday at the Webber Lawson 2nd man tournament. The girls will travel to Lincoln high school to compete in the Rose Garden Rumble and the Varsity boys will be heading to the East Bay to wrestle in The Bay Area 56 @ Castro Valley High School.
