Jonathan Kessler, of wrestling, and Peter Diepenbrock, the boys basketball coach, both received Coach of the Year honors for the 2017-2018 season respectively. Both coaches excelled on the coaching front this athletic season and it can be seen in the teams’ successes.
Jonathan Kessler, third year head coach, took the wrestling team to new heights this season. He coached his team to league wins against Cupertino, Gunn and Los Gatos among others. Along with their league success, they placed near the top in various wrestling invitationals throughout their season. The Palo Alto high school wrestling team finished 5th place overall in SCVAL this year. Along with this, Coach Kessler had 8 wrestlers place in the top six finishers for SCVAL. They finished the year 15th place overall in the Central Coast Section and he also had two wrestlers qualify for the state tournament (Calvin Grewal & Andrew Wang).
Peter Diepenbrock coached the Palo Alto high school boys basketball team to a 26-4 overall record this season. Their last loss of the season came in the championship game of the Northern California CIF State Championship game against Las Lomas. Before reaching the championship game, Coach Diepenbrock had the team on a 21 game win streak from late December to mid February. The team, loaded with seniors, found a way to win under Coach Diepenbrock’s leadership. They finished at the top of their league with an 12-0 record. The boys team also had six players make the various all league team selections this season.
