Multiple Teams · Football Clinches Playoff Spot


This past Friday night, the Palo Alto Vikings football team took on the Los Altos Eagles with a shot at securing a playoff spot in the Central Coast Section postseason, which begins the weekend of November 17th. The Vikings used a strong running attack and defense to take home a victory, by the score of 44-7. The Vikings (3-6, 3-2) have moved into a tie for 3rd place in the SCVAL-De Anza with a matchup against Wilcox ahead this Thursday evening.

Aiden Chang and Paul Jackson III led the ground attack for the Vikings, with some help from Junacio Henley and Paul Thie. The Vikings through three interceptions on the evening, but took in three of their own on defense. Dwayne Trahan, Damion Richard-Valencia, and David Hickey, all Juniors, each had an interception on the evening. Hickey returned his 32 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

On the first play of Paly’s second series, Paul Jackson III took a handoff 54 yards for a score to make it 7-0 following the Tyler Foug PAT. Foug finished the night 6 for 6 in PAT’s on the evening. Late in the first quarter, Henley took a fly sweep for a 60-yard score to make the score 14-0.

In the second quarter, Seattle Hmelar blocked a punt that resulted in a safety, which made the score 16-0. Towards the end of the first half, Aiden Chang took a carry 17 yards to the end zone to make the score 23-0 at the half.

Jackson Chryst connected with Paul Thie for a 37-yard touchdown that made it 30-0 to start the second half. That was followed up by Hickey’s interception return.

Manny Soto capped the scoring for the Vikings in the fourth with a 7-yard plunge. The Eagle got on the board towards the end of the game with a 10-yard pass from Rocky Hidalgo.

The Vikings celebrated Senior Night in strong fashion by winning for the senior class. Those honored on the evening were: Ervin Brown-Alexander, Paul Jackson III, Bryant Jefferson, Sione Latu, Joe Reynolds, Bryan Rodriguez, Manny Soto, Cullen Tellez, Exodus Tupou, and Nani Tupou.

The Vikings have a chance to finish in second place in the SCVAL-De Anza with a win at Wilcox this Thursday evening. Their position in the CCS Playoffs is still up in the air at the moment until the games are finalized this weekend.

The Vikings Frosh-Soph won 44-20 over Los Altos. The win sets up a Championship game this Thursday evening at Wilcox in which the winner will take home the sole title of the De Anza for the Frosh-Soph.

Kickoff is set for 4:30pm for the Frosh-Soph, and 7:00 for the Varsity at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara.
