The Palo Alto Vikings went through their tough stretch of Non-League games at 0-4. They entered their first SCVAL-De Anza game desperate for a victory against Homestead. Behind the legs of Junior RB Aiden Chang and the Offensive Line, the Vikings captured a timely victory by the score of 28-14.
The Vikings (1-4,1-0 SCVAL-DeAnza) started off by marching right down the field on 9 consecutive run plays. Wes Walters had a 22-yard gain that set up Chang for his first of 3 scores on the night to take a 7-0 lead following a PAT from Tyler Foug. The Mustangs (2-4, 1-1) marched down and got some help on a deflected ball that resulted in a touchdown to tie it up at 7-7. Again, the Vikings asserted the ground attack with help from a 49-yard carry by Junior WR Paul Thie. Chang then took it in 4 plays later to make the score 14-7. In the second quarter, following a missed Field Goal by Homestead, the air attack started to show its worth in mix with the ground game. With 19 seconds remaining in the half, Quarterback Kyle Mostofizadeh found Sophomore WR Jamir Shepard for a 7-yard score and the Vikings entered the locker room up 21-7.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, a costly mistake by the Vikings special teams gave the Mustangs a short field late in the third. That drive resulted in a touchdown to cut the score to 21-14. Chang had two huge runs from big holes opened by the Offensive Line in the 4th quarter that ended up seeing Chang punch one in from 9 yards out with 8:13 to play to make the score 28-14. A defensive stand with 4:07 to go would essentially end the game.
The Vikings had a bye last week and now face league rival Los Gatos (1-4, 0-1) who is coming off a defeat by Wilcox (3-2, 1-0) this past Friday night, 40-14. These two teams played twice last year with Los Gatos winning both games. In Week 9 last year, Los Gatos defeated the Vikings 35-6 at Hod Ray Field. Then, in the CCS Division 2 First Round, at Helm Field on the campus of Los Gatos, the Wildcats were again victorious, 31-6.
Los Gatos is led by Senior Quarterback Robert Nelson (72/130, 1218 yards, 13 TD/11 INT). Senior Running back Will Fordyce heads the ground attack (291 yards, 3 TD) while being a top tackler on the defensive side of the ball with 10.6 tackles/game. Junior Fullback and Linebacker Kyle Smith has 4 TD’s on offense (1 rush, 3 rec) while posting a whopping 16.8 tackles/game at the inside linebacker position.
Both teams are desperate to get a victory as the Vikings are trying to be 2-0 in the SCVAL-De Anza and the Wildcats are trying to get on the board in league play.
The Palo Alto Frosh-Soph team is off to a hot start, with a 4-1 record. They kicked off their SCVAL-De Anza campaign with a win as well over Homestead by a score of 21-0. Kevin Cullen through touchdowns to Alfredo Jack and Jaquari Jenkins. Raymond Richard ran for a score, too. The defense has only given up 22 points this season.
Frosh-Soph kicks off at 4:30, Varsity at 7:00 this Friday, October 6th.
